2 session (5 hours)
Sand casting is a classic
technique that has been used throughout history. The principle is
simple: make an impression in sand and then pour in molten metal to
create a casting.
During the sand casting course, participants cast their own objects by
taking an impression of the object in a special sand and then pouring in
molten silver. The course is held in small groups with a maximum of 4
participants.
Preparation: find and bring a form with draft (taper) that you would
like to cast. This means the object can be pressed down into the sand and then lifted
out again without the sand breaking. The best example of a form with draft is a
completely round or oval shape. Suitable objects include things like a
button, seashells, rings, a piece of candy (not too soft), a small
toy or an acorn. There is also the option to sculpt a shape in wax. It
is important not to choose objects that are too large as they will
usually be heavier in metal which can become expensive.
The main focus of the course is the casting process itself. A casting
then needs to be worked further to become, for example, a finished piece
of jewellery. This can be done after the course in your own or another
studio, or during the course. If you choose to do it during the course,
it is recommended to concentrate on one or a few castings so there is
enough time to complete your jewellery.
Silver is available for purchase
on site. (It is also fine to bring your own silver, as long as it is
stamped 925 or sterling.)
We don´t recommend that you take this course if you are pregnant.
